English & Music
4th -17th July 2018
About this course
Students attending our residential English & Music course will experience a full week with the National Schools Symphony Orchestra at Malvern College, alongside a bespoke programme of relevant English and musical tuition, advice on further education, including a visit to one of the UK's foremost music colleges, and the opportunity to visit some of the UK's top orchestral instrument suppliers.
NSSO operates three orchestras of differing standards and players will be selected on the basis of their ability. Attendees on the English & Music course must play an orchestral instrument to at least ABRSM grade 3 standard and be prepared to undergo a musical audition prior to acceptance on the course.
About the National Schools Symphony Orchestra (NSSO)
The National Schools Symphony Orchestra has been an important part of youth music in Britain for almost a quarter of a century. The annual courses are held at Malvern College, where the outstanding facilities for music and extra-curricular activity, along with its beautiful surroundings in the heart of Elgar country, have added greatly to the enjoyment of all course members – children and staff alike.
Under the direction of John Madden, Artistic Director, and Richard Dickins, Principal Conductor, NSSO courses provide the foundations necessary for building a future as an orchestral musician, whether professional or enthusiastic amateur. At the start of the course, players work with specialist instrumental coaches, to help meet the technical challenges of the repertoire, before joining together in sectional rehearsals led by our Heads of Section. The ensuing full orchestral rehearsals are thus carefully prepared for and very positive experiences.
Other than preparing the music for the final concerts the music staff also offer Jazz nights and Chamber Music sessions for those who wish to opt for them. In addition, the Repertoire Evenings allow the whole orchestra to explore significant works from the symphonic canon.
2018 marks the start of NSSO's 25th anniversary season and we are delighted that all three orchestras will be performing once again at The Malvern Theatres. Nestling at the foot of the Malvern Hills, Malvern Theatres is a major centre for the arts in the West Midlands and is a short walk from Malvern College.
